London. The Bight Eev Dr Temple, Bishop of London, has received a letter in which a threat is made to shoot him. The writer of the letter is believed to be insane. Baron Hirsch has despatched a representative to Bussia to arrange for the emigration of Jews to the Argentine Republic. A Manchester syndicate is forming a company to erect dairy factories in New Zealand. The Chartered Company's expedition to Mashonaland snffered great hardships through the supplies giving out. In the divorce case O'Shea vOShea and Parnell, the decree has been made absolute. The friends .of Mr Blame, the American Secretary of State, consider that his days of political activity are over. Order has been restored in Corfu. In the House of Lords a Bill to enable persons charged with crime to give evidence, also to enable wives to give evidence on behalf of their husbands, passed its second reading. The Bordeaux Bank has failed, with liabilities amounting to six million francs. Underwriters' are insuring the assets in Barings' estate at 15 per cent. In the House of Commons, Mr Goschen announced that the Government could not accept the Bill passed by the Newfoundland Houses cf Parliament, enforcing the modus vivendi with France, since the operation of the measure had been restricted to one year. The Newfoundland delegates who are at present in England will be heard at the bar of the House of Commons on the subject on Thursday. After passing the Bill agreeing to the modus vivendi until the end of the year, the Newfoundland Parliament, at the request of the English Liberal leaders, passed another extending its operation till 1893. The French Admiral has prohibited British residents in St George's Bay selling bait to the American vessels. Lieutenant Grant, of the 2nd
battalion of the 4th Goorkhas, who distinguished himself during the revolt in Munipur, has been promoted to the rank of Major, and Her Majesty the Queen has also conferred the Victoria Cross on him. Tenders for the' Queensland 3£ per cent loan of £2,500,000, with a minimum of 93, were opened and only £300,000 were tendered for. The Royal Commission on Labour opened its sittings on the 27th and arranged the details of procedure. Earl Derby has been appointed chairman of the transport section ; Mr Mundella, M.P., of the textile section ; and Mr David Dale, ironmaster, of the iron and coal sections.
