The Oamaru Licensing Petitions.
*
• THE PETITIONS DECLARED VOID. The hearing of the OamajJTOcensing petition is now proceeding. Mr H. Newton is engaged on behalf of the petitioners, and Mr A. 8. Adams, Dunedin, for respondents. Mr Newton has just finished his speech for the plaintiffs on the first petition. He argues that as the nomination papers were issued for the Licensing District of Oamaru instead of Oamaru Licensing Disirict, which is the name of the district as gazetted, the nominations are void. The second petition was to the effect that the election was not held by a properly qualified and appointed returning officer. At one time Oamaru was divided into foor licensing districts, and a returning officer was appointed, but sonce years ago these were amalgamated under a different title, and the same returning officer continued to act, but with the previous appointment only, Thepetition was argued at considerable length, and the Magistrate deolared the election void and a new eleotion will take plaoe.— Pregs Association.
