Mi' Walsh who has been communicating with the Defence Department re the formation of a Rifle Corps in this town, has received a letter from the Acting Under-Sec-retary stating that "I am directed by the Hon Defence Minister to inform you he very much regrets he is unable to recommend His Excellency the Governor to entertain the proposal, as the Government have decided not to establish fresh corps in isolated places-" Isolated place, seems to the Minister of Defence, the Hon Mr Seddon a fit term for a Borough of 1200 inhabitants, within seventy five miles of the capital of Colony, and that has rail communication with Wellington, Napier and New. Plymouth, and steam ship communica tion with 'Wellington, Nelson, the Grey and other ports of the South Island. An inspection of the map of the North Island might be nseful, even to a Minister. Notice is given by the County Clerk of the depositing of the rolls and defaulters lists at various places for public inspection. Fisher, M.H.R.'s, waited upon the Minister of Lands, in reference to the case of Mr F. Stevens, of the Land Department, who is one of the victims of retrenchment. They pointed out that considerable hardship would be inflicted on Mr Stevens if he was compelled to retire now, seeing that he was within seven months of completing hiS term of service, which would entitle him to a pension. The Minister stated that there was no personal feeling in the matter at all. Retrenohment had to take place in the Department, and the names of those who had to retire were selected upon the recommendation of the heads of the department as officers who could best be spared. The question of pension or allowance was never gone into. The Government had no wish to impose any unnecessary hardship, and the circumstances of Mr Stevens' case would be fully inquired into and the case would be again gone into, and he would see that no injustice was done. The deputation having thanked the Minister for his courtesy, then withdrew.
