South Africa.

In the House of Lords the Marquis of Salisbury in referring to the promises made by Portugal with regard to Mashonaland, said that promises were seldom fulfilled. He announced that the Portuguese Government had ordered the removal of every obstacle interfering with the free navigation of the Pungwe Biver and the passage into the interior, but said the demeanour of Portuguese officials in Mashonaland was .so unsatisfactory that three British warships had been ordered to rendezvous off the mouth of the river to protect British interests. The Premier further stated that a consular agent had been sent to Mashonaland to see that the terms of the modus vivendi were respected. It it now expected that the question af further reparation by Portugal will be reserved for the present.
