Manukau.

0 , — (our own correspondent). Good progress has been made with the two hotels, which, when they are completed, will greatly improve the appearance of the place. The contractor has almost completed the main street, which the settlers will find a great improvement after the mixture of mud and stumps of last winter. One of our settlers had a rather lively experience with what at first appeared to be a lunatic. He found the erratic individual exploring the bottom of the creek in search of an imaginary wife. The poor creature had spent the night in this manner, as the family heard him several times before daylight without discovering what was causing the disturbance. After some trouble he was secured and sent to Otaki, where it was discovered that he was suffering from an attack of D.T.s, and he was sent to Wellington Gaol for a month to recruit at the Government expense. Some excellent crops of potatoes have been obtained this year, Mr R. Whiley obtaining twenty tons off one acre which he had stumped. Miss Cundy, the recently appointed assistant teacher, has commenced her duties at the school. Although the shooting season for native game began on the Ist April, I have not heard of any bags being obtained. Pigeons were plentiful a week or two ago, but they seem to have disappeared now.
