Restored at last.
The Prussian Government obtained possession of the late King of Hanover's private fortune in 1866 through a disgraceful trick, of whioh the late Emperor William was always heartily ashamed, and the money would have been restored to the Duke of Cumberland ten years ago but for the pertinacious opposition of Prince Bismarck, who detests the Quelphs as heartily as Lord Palmerston detested the Bourbons. The Emperor Frederic, however, was resolved to make restitution, and would have done so if his life had been prolonged for only a few weeks, and' he earnestly enjoined his son, the present emperor, to lose no time in giving back King George's fortune to his family. The Emperor Wilh'am now appears to have arranged to act in accordance with the wishes of his father and grandfather, and the restoration of the 55,000,000 of marks which were seized from King George in 1866 will make the Duke of Cumberland about the riches! royal personage in Europe, as he already possesses an immense fortune, The property is charged with largf annuities to Queen Marie of Banover, the duke's mother, and to his sisters, Princesses Frederica and Princess Marie. It is well knowr that the enormous annual revenue from th^mjelph Fund was used bj Prince Bismarck for secret service. and it has always been described bj his opponents as the " Reptile Fund.'
