-♦ (our own (correspondent). > Easter is over and work com- ! mences again. A good many of the people round about attended the Review at Palmerston and seemed well pleased with all they saw. I should fancy that the whole show would have had a bettor effect, held some where near Foxton, say on the race course. These things look much better if viewed from some rising ground, don't you think. The Cavalry were the favourites only they had hardly enough room to manuevre properly. Still the whole thing seemed a success as far as the gallant defenders, and the general public were concerned. It shows that we need not be so very much afraid of a Russian invasion after all. The shooting season has opened round about here, I'm afraid game is just as scarce as last year. For one thing all the trees which supplied feed to them are destroyed, and little boys who come from Wellington help to frighten the poor things away. Then again pheasants are on the decrease, well, we can't expect to breed both weasels and ground game they don't hit it together. It is quite a common thing to come across half a dozen stoats and weasels during the day anywhere along the railway line. Our enterprising townsman, Mr Land, is doing very well with his flaxmill lam glad to say. He has been working night and day this last week, and turning out a very good sample of fibre. I believe it is his intention to close during the winter months. Sensible man if he can do it. New faces are coming amongst us every day, and there is talk of several more new houses to be erected in the township, which, by the way, will j soon rival Foxton. A newspaper and police station is all that is wanting to complete matters; not forgetting a Town Council. Our road to Kereru is all but complete. That is so far as riding through is concerned. It will be some little time before it will be opened for wheeled traffic. When finished we will have a good road to Otaki, although we should prefer one tq Palmerston instead. Still, before very long, I hope to be able to write and report progress on that particular road, as there are two or three contracts let already.
