Wanganui Education Boa.
A correspondent of the Wjinganui Herald, writing under the tulf- of "Nemesis ," brings under notice a mat'.er which should, in all fairness be placed right. He says '. — I wish to draw the attention of the Minister for. Education and the general public to a case in which I submit the acting not only autocratically but also illegally. It is well known how the Board in times past favoured the Collegiate school in reference to Government scholarships, and now they are trying to bolster up the newly established Girls' College by conapeHing the girls who have won scholarships to board at the said College. The 51st section of the Education Act says:--' The successful competitor for any such scholarship shall receive the amount of his or her scholarship only as long as he or she shall continue his or her education at any school or educational institution under the control of the Board at which the higher brnnches of education are taught." This does not mean board in any seuse and yet the Secretary of the Board has compelled the parents of a scholarship holder to board their little girl at the College. The parents are poor and cannot afford it. The £40 (scholarship money) per annum would enable the parents of.ijhe said girl to pay the College fees and pay for private board iu Wanganui, which they can t,et for less than £20 per school year ; now the parents have been told by the Secretary that they must pay the £40 for board at the College, and in addition £12 to £20 extra for tutition fees. ' The parents cannot afford to pay this, and will be compelled most regretfully to forfeit the scholarship.
