Opening of the Gorge Line.

The opening was celebrated on Monday, though there was . not very much enthusiasm. Palmerston did not observe a general holiday, though there were a number of people about. A special train from Wellington brought 250 excursionists, including the Minister for Education, Messrs McKerrow and Hannay, Railway Commissioners, and Messrs Hogg, T. K. McDonald, Duthie, and Newman, M. H. R's. The train was met at the station by the Mayor, Mr. Snelson, and city councillors, who escorted the Hon. Mr Reeves and the Commissioners to a large marquee in the Square, where they were entestained at luncheon. The Wanganui train brought about 150 excursionists. A very heavy train went to Woodville where the distinguished visitors again lunched, and speeches were made, Deputations were met, and then a return was made, the train getting to Wellington at nine o'clock. The line appeared to be perfectly safe and only heavy rains will have to be feared. It is evident great caution in bad weather will have, for some time to be used. This link, just opened, connects 500 miles of railways, and as yet it is too early to predict the great influence it may I have on the prosperity of this West Coast.
