The Argentine Crisis.
♦ The Argentine Republic after nearly upsetting the financial stability of London, has at last, so the cables inform us, signed contracts for the settlement of its finances. On the date this cablegram is sent from London, one is despatch "d from Buenos Ayres, the capital of the Hepublic, stating that a financial panic has occurred in this city. A great run was made on the Provincial Bank. The Government, following the example set in London, are, with the help of private merchants, coining to the assistance of the Bank, and to place all on an "even keel," the Banks have suspended payment for two days to permit of them arranging for a loan in order to seenre the Provincial Bank. The interest displayed by England in this country is estimated by its trade which amounted to £10,897,000 imports and £2,000,000 exports, all with the United Kingdom. In 1891 its population was reckoned at 4,200,000.
