Christchurch Infanticide.
On Friday the detectives were engaged following up a cue, and the result of their work has been the arrest of Constable Daniel F anagan, stationed at Adding ton, on the charge of murdering the child whose head was found in Gloucester street. They subsequently arrested Flannagan's wife on the same charge There is a third party implicated, the daughter. Flanagan is about 60 years of as;e, and his been 25 years in the police force. His wife is a'so of an advanced age. Three weeks ago the daughter was coufined of a male child, which she gave out to nurse. On Monday evening she visited the muse in company with her brother, paid the boar.J, and took thechiid away. On seeing the report of the d-scovery iv the Press, they went t > the nurse and asked whether she had received a visit from the police. She answered " No.'' They then told her to keep quiet and say nothing about what they had to inform her. i hey t^ld her that after leaving the house at djsk they were met l\y three men who ru-hed them in 01 muester street. They had a ro.e wiii which the woman was tied, aud the child was taken away. They went home and told Flanagan wbao hal happened. The nurse has indnntifie 1 the baby's clothing, which was foutul as that supplied '0 her by the woman who took the ohild away At the Police Court on Saturday morning Flanagan and his wife were charged with the murder of the infant. Inspector Pendwr s»iid the case was a very grave one, but desired to say as little as possible about it. He had no hesitaiion in saying that the evidence pointed very strongly to the prisoners being imp'icated in the murder, particularly the female prisoner. There was no doubt a foul murder had been committed. He asked for a remand till Wednesday next, which was granted. — Press Association. \
Mary Jane Flanagan, the daughter of the accused, arrived in "Wellington by the Te Anau on Saturday, travelling under the name oi Miss Cullen, and soon after the arrival of the steamer she was arrested. At the station she was taken ill, and seemed so unwell thnt Inspector Thomson had her brought before Mr Litilejohn, J.P., at 4 o'clock and formally remanded till Monday, ao that she might have better treatment at the gaol in the meantime. She is a woman of apparently about 28 or 30 years of age.
