All lovers of music will be glad to learn that the disagreement between Messrs Gilbert, Sullivan andD'Oyly Carte have been settled, and the tri-umvirate will again work together to amuse and please the public. Our readers will remember that the stook sale at Bulls will be held on Tuesday, Nominations for the hack races of the Summer meeting of the Foxton Racing Club close to-night at 9 o'clock, Tenders for the construction of 100 chains of drains for Mr Davies close on Monday. Business is brisk in this district, and we do not know of any one {unemployed who desires work. In the hemp report published in another column it will be seen that the highest prioe our hemp fetched in London, was £21 15s, though the stock on hand was 5394 tons against 102G tons the previous year. This appears to us to be an indication that the market is firm. We draw attention to tha great decrease in the receipts of Manila, in 1333, 600,000 bales were imported to London, and in 1890 only 450,000 ba'es. The stock on hand was only 2215 bales against 43)JS last year. The stock of Sisal was only 3.3 tons ! Government servants, are servants of ths Government, but at times should be treated like the servants of private firms. The last Frisco' mail arrived after ten o'clock at night, and the postal officials had to work very late in the night to get the mail despatched by the morning trains. So far this is as it should be, the majority, the public must be considered, but why not also the men. Yet it is stated that the clerks have to do all this without overtime or extra pay. If so, it is mean, The Chess championship has been won by Mr R. J. Barnes of Wellington, Mr Siedeberg of Dunedin being second. Mr Hookham, last year's champion was third. The Advocate says • — A gentleman from Wellington had a capital day's fishing in the Oroua Biver, near Feilding, one day last week. His catch consisted of live good trout, the largest turning the scale at 51bs , and the smallest weighing l£lbs. This proves without doubt the successful stocking of the Oroua river with these fish. The Manawatu Times says : — Bidding was not spirited at Messrs Stevens and Gorton's stock sale yesterday, (Thursday) and most of the lots were passed in. Subsequently a good business was done privately, and the results of the sale proved very satisfactory. We may note that the tendency of stock-owners at present is to place very high reserves on their entries. Dr Liddon's funeral was a stiring ••ob-ject-lesson " in funeral reform, a cause the late Canon had much at heart. There was no official black anywhere to be seen. The altar was decked as for a festival. The opening in the floor th.ough which the coffin descended was draped with red cloth, and flowers were abundant both in the form of tribute and ornament. Not even the Canon's stall was draped with blaok. Our Wellington contemporaries are| rather taken back at the big shipping companies treating Waitara and Wanganui to the same rate for freights as Wellington ! It is not generally understood that a borough has no power to alter the name of a street that has once been given to it The Wellington City Counoil will apply for power whenever any alteration is proposed to the Act. The Railway Commissioners ann unce that wool and tallow consigned from Longburn to Foxton will be oharged, including wharfage, wool, undumped, 2s per bale; tallow, per ton (minimum 4 tons), 8s 6d. On the Napier- Wellington and Wanganui sections butter, packed in consignments of not less than lOcwt , will be charged at the classified rates for class D. The progress any of our townsmen make, is a matter of interest to all. To-day we were shown by Mr E. Osborne a coat made at his establishment, which is most satisfactory as to style, fit, and finish. Mr Osborne has been struggling with tailors for some time past, and has foun 1 that they are not so steady at their employment as could be wished. Hj has, therefore, devoted a deal of his time in practising the art of cutting, and has at last readied the point he has been aiming at. The coat shown us was solely measured and cut out by himself, and he will have it on view at hie shop to-day and Monday. We recommend an inspection, as it proves what can bs done in our town, and by our own men.
