Hemp Market.

« Messrs Murray, Roberts & Co have favoured us with a copy, through Messrs McMillan Rhodes & C •., of a special memorandum received from their London Brokers, dated 27th November 1890:— Hemp— During the past fortnight our market has met with fluctuations partly owing to the action of the Foreign Syndicate, who had previously sent in orders to purchase, which enhanced the market, but these having been withdrawn, prices have given way. The total quantities catalogued on the 19th and 26th inst, of all descriptions, comprise 4297 bales, of which 1326 bales sold. New Zealand— Buyers were very indisposed to operate on the 19th inst, owing to orders having been previously fulfilled, and prices gave way £8 to £i per ton. Yesterday, however, with the chief holders being firm, a slightly better tone prevailed, and prices were par to an occasional

,dvance of 5s to 10a per ton ; unIressed qualities, however, continue leglecfeed. Mauritius— A quieter tone has prevailed, being rather more freely offered, and prices have given way 10s to 20s per ton. 1061 bales offered, 805 sold, prices realised from L 23 to L2B per ton. Tow — 29 bales sold, all round, including sea damaged, at L 6 per ton. Imports to 81st October — 1890, 1701 tons ; 1889, 2024. Deliveries—lß9o, 1009 tons; 1889, 1931. Stock -1890, 1205 tons; 1889, 366. Manila — Owing to large receipts there, has checked business in this market, and prices are LI 10s to L 2 per ton cheaper since our last. Quotations nominal, for fair current distant shipment L 42 to L 42 10s per ton c.f, and i. 10 bales at auction sold all rcuud at L4O per ton. Receipts since January Ist to November 22nd were -1890. 456,000; 1889, 519,000; 1888, 600,000.
