Sale of Yearlings.
+ EXTEAOEDINAEY PBICES. The first of the yearling sales was held on the 31st at Wellington Park Mr Thomas Morrin stud farm. About ' 800 persons were present, including . Messrs W. R. Wilson, J. Crozier, >•; and Day (Australia), S. H. Gollan. . . * andJ. D. Orniond (Napier), G. G. - Stead and P. Butler (Christchurch), I D. O'Brien, and others from various ",,... parts of the Colony. The stock was offered by Hunter and Nolan, Mr Philson acting as auctioneer. The remarkable feature of the sale was the high price paid for the colt by Nordenfeldt from Frailty, a splendid looking yearling, big, and with great hindquarters. When he was brought -' ' into the ring Mr Stead started with 800 guineas, but almost at the same time Mr D. O'Brien exelamed' l'll give •> ■ V you a thousand for him.' At this there was a round of applause, and then a most interesting scene occurred. £ The bidding started in real earnest, and the figures mounted up rapidly, . 25 guineas bids coming from all .; parts of the ring as fast as the auctioneer could take them. Messrs '- » Butler, Wilson, Gollan. Marshall, ,"' % - Day, and others carried this on mi —^ til 1675 guineas were reached, at about which point Mr Wilson retired, and Mr Day followed suit . shortly afterwards. The contest • '■■''; now resolved itself into a duel between Messrs Gollan and O'Brien. Mr Gollan bid 1750 and Mr O'Brien 1800. Mr Gollan said 25, and MiO'Brien then exclaimed " 2000 and j that's the lot." Mr Gollan at once advanced 25 guineas and accordingly secured the colt at 2025 ■. guineas, the highest price realised '.,.-- -for a yearling in the colonies. — Press Association.
