A Great Blasting Operation.
On Saturday an important experiment was performed at tin; famous Dinorwie quarries, <.'arnarvonsliire, by which about a quarter of a million tons of rock were removde. The blasting operations were the work of between two and three years. The part to be removed was an obstructive rock which prevented the quarrvmen from carrying on their work. A tunnel ssixty yards loug had been driven into the rock at a distance of about forty yards from the surface, and from this tunnel a series of six chambers were excavated, varying from 4ift to 20ft in length, and in these chambers was placed a quantity of gelatine, amounting in all lo 7,000 lb, equal in strength to about twenty tons of gunpowder. The <-xperiineiit was carried out under the supervision of Mr \Y. W. Vivian the nunag.T of the quarry, and was a com*. ]eto success. The blast was the greatest ever attempted in North WaU-s, the cost being about £(500 and the quautity of rock displaced I eing so enormous that it will take s m<! huiulrels of men about nii<i: months to remove it.
