Election Items.
Mr J. G. Wilson had, as reported by our own correspondent, a capital meeting at Manakau, also one at ; Levin. Votes of confidence, prac- , tically unanimous were carried at ; both places. The support that it was thought Mr Pirani had secured in Ihe bush and flax districts is last melting away. A liule opposition soon t causes him to disclose an irritability • of temper which is not in keeping : with the position of a representative ' of a large and important district. At Levin he got very angry at some > questions put to him, one man • wanting to know, you know, why ' he said one thing at Otaki, auJ another at Levin ! The questioner ' was rude enough to suggest that i there was a good deal of claptrap 1 talked -at election times to eitck I votes. The cap seemed to fit Mr , Pirani as lie ordered the man outl side tho hall and promised to see ' him afterwards As the qnestioner ' is only a big powerful fellow he is going into training to be prepared. ■ The audience seemed much amused. Mr Pirani's supporters, if not Mr 1 Pirani himself, have circulated a j document printed at the Wellington ■ .Evening Pre*s office, reflecting most unfairly on Mr Steven's action dnr- ! ing the three years he was in Parliamont. The question as to the right : of criticism w-j do net clialouge, but • it is fair to do so openly and let the person criticised know what you are doing, so that he can defend himself. This is just what Mr Pirani's supporters do not do. We hoar that Mr Pirani's supporters here liavo circulated a very inipropor and silly would bo "skit" on Mr Wilson, which has had " the effect <»f turning the moro respeetable of Mr Pirani's supporters from lii in. We are glad to learn that the total abstainers, almost to a man, havede- ' eido.l to cast in their lot with Mr 1 Wilson, notwithstanding Mr Pirani 1 being a total abstainer. They have had communications from their 1 friends in Palmerston who have assured th.-m that that is what they ! intend to do, though they know Mr Pirani so well
