Manawatu Rowing Club.
On Tuesday afternoon the first round of heata, for the Silver Cup Race, was run off before a very fair gathering of spectators. The day was all that could be desired for the competitors, but was rather cold for the on-lookers. The course laid down by the Racing Committee is from two buoys anchored opposite Mr Duncan's house, and the win-ning-post opposite the old ferry. Mr Ingram acted as starter and Mr Hunter as judge. The following is thp result of the first day's racing : — First Heat. McMillan (20 sees.) v. Hinchliffe (80 sees.) -This nice wa.-: won by Hinchliffe by four lengths. The race would not have been so easy for the winner had McMillan steered a better course, but he took the centre of the river and, therefore, had all the " hard graft ;" and when he saw his mistake it was too late to make pood the distance he had lost. Second Heat. J. Symons (25 sees.) v. P. Curtis (80 sees.) — P. Curtis won by three lengths. Symons had a very bad hand, and also took a bad course, through which the race was not so dose ns it ought to hove been. Third IJk.vi. C. Symons (2~> sees.) v. Khotfes ; (2fi sees.) — Symons won easily. The loser giving up the met- opposite the boat -shed. Fourth Hk.vi. Cook (2Z xf>eO v. Cowlep (15
sees.) — Cowles won as he liked, as ' Cook gave up" when he had rowed ! about two-thirds of the course. ' Fepth Heat. Blackby (sc.) v. F. Curtis (10 sees.) — Blackby not turning up at the time appointed for the race Curtis claimed a bye. As Potter (20 sees.) drew a bye at the last drawing for opponents he and Curtis will make six competitors to be drawn in the different heats for next Tuesday afternoon.
