(From Our Own Correspondent.) This Day. The Labour conference met yesterday but was adjourned owing to the absence of the Hou Mr McLean. The Premier was not present and the Government will not be represented. Rumours are current that the Union Steam Shipping Company will compromise, but the general opinion is that the conference is a farce. One hundred and fift}- men are on their way to the "Weat Coast to take the place of the coal companies' hands on strike. Mr Bell opens his electioneering campaign at the Opera Hou&e tonight. A man named Dean murdered his child in Abel Smith street yesterday, and is supposed to be insane.
