LISSIM.anV WILKS. VERDICT FOR PLAINTIFF FOR £200 AND COSTS. The case was heard before His Honor the Chief Justice, Sir JPrendegast on Friday. Mr Baruicoat who appeared for the plaintiff (in* strucced b}' Mr W. A. Sandilauds, of I- ci ding) applied to have the indictment amended, to which the Chief Justice assented. Evidence was called as to receipt of the letter containing the libel. Messrs A. A. Browne, GK Carson, and F. Lethbridge was called as witnesses. His Honor, addressing the jury, explained that as this was an uudefended case, they would have to decide as, to the amouut of damages for the publication of the libellous letter. If they were satisfied that the plaintiff's character had been injured, they should award substantial damages. The jury retired at 12.40. and afcer 15 minutes' absence returned a verdict for £200 damages, costs being allowed according to scale. — Chronicle.
