I The minutes of the 'ast meeting wtn;e read and confirmed ' TiNWARD CORKESPONDENOK. From Mary Jane Reeve, complaining of the rates' on the old tvamway i sheds, and aslcing for a reduction. C. P. Gnerii) re power to prosecute a pev>on who, rescued stock being taken to pound. * The following resolutions were passer! : — '' ' Propnspd by the Mayor, seconded by << T Williams, That Mr U, Symons be allowed four pounds for oleaning ou'lpt-drairi through bis propprty. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Jenk'sV That the rate upon tramshed* property remaiu as upon, roll, and that the owner have the ] question of value explained by the | Council Clerk. 1 , After a conversation on P. Gnerin's lett'T, in which, t w*s evident that the CotmeiMoty'bVieved in supporting the ranker, it waa : — Prnppted by the Mayor, ae.'pn 'ed byCr McMi lan", That this ' (3 >unci' authorize •thei i An?' i r to enter an action ag-amst^Mr Vautier for rescuing his cattle when on th« way to' pound. •■/. .■•'•! Oftrried unanimously. Pronosfd'by 'Cr Jpnks. «Monrled by Cr Jonson^ That the offer of Mr Hillary to bring i*he old punt down to Foxton for 10/r be accepted. — Ca r| ied. Proposed by th<? May^r, seconded by Cr Jenk», that Mr Wilson, onr m^mlier, be requpite'i to bring under the notice ef the G>vernm«nt. the f»ot that the Electoral district of Fnxton has no Returning Officer:— Carriad. Proposed by Williams, seconded by Cr McMi lan, That the consent nf th« Horowhenna County Council be asked .to dispose of tho old punt: __ Carried. The following report was read :— EEPORT ON THE IVENUE BRIDGE. " To His Worship, the Mayor. " Sir.^Being asked by you to report to your Council oh the present state of tne Avenue Bridge re repairs .0 Same. "On examining he biidße, I find *hat the capsills and pile'-iead?, also end of dfckbeams, are rotten- mo c or less— a.iv is ' unsafe for heayy traffic, aad vrji] require , to b« raplaoed with a new bvidgt or large

culvert. Ag a new bridge of this description, similar to the old one, wou'd cost not less than £200, to remove the o'd oridge aod to build a new one, I think, woutd bs a waste of money, ai a dulvei't E) x 6 world carry all the water that is likely to be brought to it from both drains. " On looking over the old bridge I find that all the i-'uber in the lower pe.ri if j Bowie 1 ., and cou'd be vied in bui'ding the j new cu'vevt . Wuat I would recommend would be ';o out down vie old Liridge o'fi or 7 feet from he gvourld-iola'.es, leare the aide of the bridge on jhe western side vt'ieYn it h, and move the eastern sice in to form the sides of the eulvei-i. I wov.'d also vecommend that another ten feet be put on to the end of down-stream. If this is done •it woulc 1 enable the Council to widen .the road at the south end of the bridge another .'eight f«et,"as the road- iv ve-y narrow at this loinfc. If the Council decide to put in the cuWert, it will requi"e new tings up and down stream to prevent acoui'bg ; and tie 'ootiom of t"ie eulye.'t shoult"oe faicined add well tied down with stout wivs. " I fad by e~perienoe that a'A brdges built on sandy soil ro- firsi ai the su'face, and make' t.'iem unsafe for heavy traffic Not so with cr'.vei-wi t'aat are buried deep in wet soil, sand oc clay. A culvart ol the dfscvlp'ioß given abote would last, deep in the ground, from' 20 to 25 years, and would always be safe. I may mention Aat nearly all the timber .in the lower park of ihe bridge, iaoludiog deckbeams and planting, can be used, by dv ling off all rotten por ioas, in the colve • ,s. The only new iii'jjer' required would be the plauki ig for .he top anil new wings. I hava made no es'ima.e of oosi of wo.k bofree your Council iecio.es wje .be • you w.i'l build a new b:-ic ge or put ia a eulve.'t. Tn any case, the wo:'k cannot Je dono t? 7 l af.er t lie new year. Timber has been ordered, by Mr Gibson to shore up tae ok", bi'iu^' fOi.- the time being. Waiting your reply — " I have, <fee.,. " Gbo. Nte." The Mayor stated that Mr Nye bad looked at the bridge at his re quest, and hnd further stated that he would make no charge,, and if he superintended the erection of abridge orciilveit he still would look after it without expecting , any payment. He thought they should thank, Mr Nye and wait fr>r a time. Cr Williams thought the bridge could be mads bo as to last for a' long time yet. Mr Jonson said that had he been asked he would have reported just as Mr Nye hnd done. Proposed by Gr McMillan, sec ondpd by Cr Williams. That Mr Nye be thanked for his report on the Avenue bridge : — Carried. The Council went into CommiJtee. On resuming the following resolutions were agreed to.
