London. At noon on Sunday the break in the cable was. repaired. After a week's efforts to paralyse tbe Postal Service, the postmen seiaf a deputation to Mr Kaikei, the Post-master-General, with proposal* of a more moderate nature. It ii beliered that the crisis baa pasted. Altogether 400 pestiaen hare been dismissed. These have petitioned to be reinstated, accusing >he Upion of having deceived them, and usaert that they will not rejoin, it if they manage to steure reinstate ment. During the strike the police ejected the postmen from several post offices with violence. The Union leaders called for a general strike, which was not responded to. City merchants and members of theSteek Exchange urged firmness on the part of the post office authori* ties, and offered the services of their clerks. At auction on the the 12th 1000 bales of New Zealand hemp were . sold Common sorts are easier, and good firmer. | Mr R. J, Jeffrey, managing director of the Union Mortgage and Agency Company of Australia, unnertnkes the management of the Assets Company, formed to take over the globo assets of tbe Bank of New Zealand. The Bank of New Zealand, ihara* are quoted at £8 and £6. The American ship Boboek has arrived at Qneeenstown with a portion of the crew of the Merope, bound from New Zealand to London on board. On the 26th June the Boboek found the Merope in flames and burmt nearly to the water's edge. The rest of the crew are on board an American ship found to Hull. The captain and eleven of the crew oNlje ship Merope were landed at Deal, tlie vessel's cargo having fired spontaneously n»ar the Azores, the crew took to the boats and were reined. The Merope was bound from Wellington. Mr H. M. Stanley had a very serious attack of gastritis two days before his marriage with Miss Dorothy Tennant, but was able to at* tend the ceremony in Westminster Abbey, though he was in a very weak state. Tbe officiating clergy men at the marriage ceremony were the Bishop of Ripon, tbe Master of the Temple, and the Dean of West* minster. Among those present were the Prince of Wales, Mr Gladstone, the leaders of society, art and litera ture. The Abbey was crowded with the public. All the member! of tbe Bmin Bey Relief Committee were present at the marriage of Mr H. M. Stanley, who was very unwell and appeared j supported by a st'ek. King Leo | pold's representative acted as Stan- ■ leys best man, and Stanley's African ' companions as groomsmen. The spectacle was a most brilliant one, and the presents were both numerous and valuable. Stanley is slowly recovering from his attack of gastritis.
