THE MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
» Ttie ordinary monthly meeting 1 of Manawatu County Council was held yesterday, the fo lowing councillor hpingpro»tßnf,-CT«. Ran«on (ctmir),
McLennan, Sanson, Saxon, Robinson, and Hammond. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. On the reading of an agreement bofcweeu Mr Brookes and the Chairman, by which the former had agreed te ran the tram for the past month, bufc without paying anj rent, Or Sanson took exception to the terms. The Chairman said he had tried to geu the lessee of the tramway to take it fortnb month at his late con tract fate, but he wou^ ag™e to par no rent, arid Wanted tlift counC.U *'° make him some pay'flHtffifc on the ground that he was losing niottey. Ho had shown his bo dr, from which it appeared that he was losing money on the contract, and he thought the best way was to let him have it for the month for nothing. Cr Sanson did not think it was the best way. It was nonsens« for Mr Brookes or anybody else to talk of losing on the contract. Anybody who went up and down the line could see that he had several hands on the tramway repairs just before his contract closed, and that was how it was made to appear that there was a loss. He said that the tramway had been harmed by the fact of Mr Brookes saying that he had been loosing. Cr McLennan said that he had not seen any increase of the staff on the Une. Cr Saxon objected to passing a vote of censure on the Chairman and said that seeing that the books showed n^ profit, the chairman had done perfectly right. Cr Mitchell took the same view of the matter, and remarked that the Chairman could hare got anyone else to take the tramway on auch terms, and the matter then dropped The council then went into committee to consider tenders. Nine tenders were received for work on Rowe's-line ; two for the collection of dog-tax ; and two for the lease of the tramway. On the Council re suming t'»e ordinary meeting it was reported that the following had been accepted in committee : — Howe's'ine, E- A. Buchanan, 5s 3d per chain ; collecting the dog-tax, C. H. Tomlinsan, allowing the council 5s 6d per dog ; lease of tramway for two years, D. M. Rrookes, £150. A special meeting was then he'd to pass a special order making provision for lettiug the tramway to Mr T>. M. Brookes for a period of two years. The ordinary meeting was then resumed. Tenders were ordered to be called for a few chains of drain and formation in the Sanson township, and for working the Shannon Feny for one, too, or three years. The overseer's report was read, dealing in detail with the condition of the country roads. Having re ported that J. Smith, living near the Shannon Ferry, had built a cowshed upon a road only ha f -chain wide, it wa s resolved, on the motion ofCr McKonzie, seconded by the chairman, " That notice be sent to Mr J. Smith to remove his cowshed off the public road near the Shannon Ferry, at Moutoa."
