Beware of the Handsome Cow.
The American Dairyman says : — We know this is rank heresy, but we also know a good many handsome cows that are going the roundi from one dairy to another like a negociable bank bill. There is the haudsome cow that performs wonders jusfc after calving, and then forgets to keep it up, but goes dry from four to six months, each year, and has very little cream or butter in her milk. For this reason no one cares t o keep her the second year ; but -when standing with a fine calf by her side, she is so imposing in appearance that anyone will, give a good price for her. The only rule in cow judging is, " Pretty is that pretty does," for the milk is what you are after. No good dairymau will point out the handsome cows in his herd as the best.
