The Ragatta.
Q^t ce £ ie *' i ™^ +M regatta held under the «,v;spices of the Manawatn Bowing Club took place, and afforded a very pleasant day's fun._ The we*afhev was fine and coo], but the wind was a great- deal too prominent, as it blew half, .'? not three quarter of a gale, which told vr.v severely upon. the, competitors, and also ir?on 'the. pnlbok'e :i s, who, .however r.ve not sU'-trtoseci to be Conaitieveri. The pro.tvainme was carefully I carried out, and in 'fair good .time. when it j is. Considered the delay caused .by the strong ! wind. The officers worketi obligingly and I well, arid the' heaviest part, fell, upon the | shoulder's best able id bear 1 it> viz.," Mi* P. Niriig i who acted both as Secretary and Treasurer, as the proper Treasurer, — Mr Potter, was distinguishing himself the greater part of the day,- at the right end of an oar. The Judge, Mr Thynne had nothing to worry him, except the struggle to maintain his position at the end of the whavf, against the gale blowing, but in t'ns case, as in many others/weight told. Theve was.no hitch, no protest and no accident, as the two we shall mention later onj had ell the appeamncd of being the wilfal intent of all the persons concerned. We can therefore heartily congratulate those on the success of their efforts, and trust that it will stir them up to future deeds. There was a very large attendance of spectators who. took a most, lively interest in all the proceedings. The following are the results of the various events : — Ist Heat — Champion Pair Oared Race — three crews starred, being Symons p.nd Me Phun, Potter and McMillan, CivUs and Bacon. This was a splendid rc.ee all through, the boats keeping well together, and the crews straining evevy ndrve to obtain the t^'sfc posilion. From the buoy to the post thn i-pce wn.s very exciting between Poster's and Curtis' boats, and the foi'tnev on'v won by a bare length.
