The Race Meeting.

Once again the Foxton Racine Club was favoured with a beautiful day for theii summer meeting on Wednesday. Tho early morning looked exceedingly like tbo promise of a wet day, but by seven the sun shone out and dispelled all mists and. the day continued very fine with a breeze, that tempered the heat of the sun. The racing was good all through, and the hacks gave very large fields. The attendance was larger than lias been present at any other time, and. it waa reckoned by competent judges that between sixteen and seventeen hondr d people were on the ground. The ladies .attended in much laro-er numbers than we have previously witnessed, aud lightened the scene with their costumes. It was remarked that the dresses on this occasion was a feature in the meeting. The side of the course opposite the Grand Stand wasjlined with vehicles and the stand was crowded at every racs. The privilege holders had their holiday as they were all kept as busy as they could be. Tho Government train was the longest one known, having equal to fifteen car^ riages in its train, the passengers of which were chiefly for the course. The tram train followed and brought thirty six more passengers. The day passed : off. most succesef ully, there being no accident, and not a single protest or interruption. There was a little, delay in getting the races off, and therefore the time was not strictly kept,, but this was unavoidable owing to the numbers of the entries in the two hack races. The visiters were extremely pleased with the meeting and the state of the ooursoj which was better than it has ever been. Mr F. G. Andrews the honorary secretary worked hard, and gained the compliments of all for his energy, and courtesy. Mr McMillan as clerk of the scales car ried cut hia duties to every one's satisfaction. The Judge, Mr Robinson bad an easy duty, though once or twice it looked as though he would have had some difficulty. Mr Williams held the two booths at which he had all his Work, the luncheon, room, [.which he had made over to M'-s Reid, of the Buffet, was crammed for hours. The {luncheon provided at the etart was excellent, though we heard people-say, who. were late, that it was not, up to their expectations. It is always wisest to be in time, mrmtor hmch. Tk& ■ towards had each their allotted task, which they promptly attended to. The starter Mr J. R. Macdonald had some delays in getting the fields together, but when he did, he secured very fair starts. The * Clerk of the course ia to bej complimented on the manner he kept the course, which was better than we have seen for sonm meetings, We must not forget io mention that Mr Lyon rendered rno&t useful volunteer assistance to the Secretary, and the thanks of the i club are due to him for it The totalisator was worked by Meisrs Hill and Poole who put through the large sum of -£2820.
