TUESDAY'S HALF HOLIDAY.

Th/> commencement of the weekly halfholidays was celebrated by what was termed a fancy costume cricket match, and a boating party in the. evening. The cricket match resulted in a good game, but the fancy costumes were few sad far between. The Messrs Startup appeared, on* as a clown, the other as a sailor, and Mr G. Williams as a darkey, with boots something under a yard in length. ""'However, this was of not much consequence, as the •■ past he took was that of umpire, and all he had to do was to cross from one sWe of the wicket to the other, and to be a mark at which the batter* endeavoured-to scad the ball again t. He, however, survived the ordeal. We were glad to notice that Mr Samuel takes a genuine interest in the game, and captained one team, and Mr McMillan the opposing team. The' game went merrily.. The largest scorers on Mr Samuel's aide were W. Cook 12, W. Ingram 7, and on Mr McMillan'* side A. Reeve made the grand score of 32 and was then stumped out, Hinchclyffe made 10, as did also Mr T. P. Williams, the othei-B being nowhere! The chief bowlers were Hinchclyffe, Philpott, W. Ingram and Jftcombe. Mr McMillan's team won by 42 runs. Mr W. Langley umpired for Mr Samuel's team. The fair sex graced the scene by their attendance, and the afternoon was all that could be desired, except perhaps being rather too het. The parties taking advantage of Mr Hillary's kind offer of boats, had a pleasant row up to Wirokino, and got a tow home by the useful little steamer Ivy. The day should be memorable to the employees. Appended are the scores of the cricket match : —
