Foxton Borough Council.

The usual monthly meeting of the above Council was held at the Library Buildings on Monday 2nd September at two p.m. Present— The Mayor and Crs T. U. Cook, G. Nye, F. Jenks, J. R. McMillan and T. P. Williams. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The lodging housekeepers were reported to have arranged for their licenses. The billard room proprietor has also paid his license. Outward correspondence between Borough Council and Manawatu Council was read. Inward correspondence.;— From C. Symons re drain. From T. Wilson objecting to pay rates on Mrs Larkworthy's property. Cr Nye desired to bring under notice the state of the old cemetery in the town. He suggested that Mr Spelman be called upon to repair the fence. Cr Gower proposed, and seconded , by Cr Nye— "That Mr Spelman be requested to replace the fence between his land and the old cemetery that has been destroyed by his horses. The Mayor suggested that some steps be taken to secure a new punt. He had written to Mr Wilson asking if a loan could be obtained under the Loans to Local Bodies Act. The clerk reported that only two licenses for drays have been taken out.

It was resolved that the extra roadman receive a weeks' notice. That 100 copies of in-patients tickets for hospital be procured. That those persons who have not compiled with the notice to cut and clear the gorse on the roads fronting their properties be given 14 days to complete the work and in event of this not being done, in accordance with this demand tenders be called for grubbing and clearing the same. The Mayor, stated, that Cr Nye the Chairman of the Public Works Committee had suggested the advisability of trying to let the maintenance of the roads by tender. Cr Nye had obtained a copy of the specification from the Palmerston Borough. The Mayor read them for the information of the Council. Cr Nye stated that the estimated cost of keeping roads in repair in Palmerston was £750 for about 35 miles and the tenders were £775 for 2 years. Following two years was L650, Here we have 22 miles of roads, of which on third is metalled. This question was allowed to stand over. That Crs Nye and Cook be asked to take steps to get title to the old cemetery site from Kereopa transferred to the Borough. Accounts passed : — G. Trask, £9 9s ; J. Sullivan, £6 15s ; C. Spring, £4 4s 2d; T. F. Gibson £4 3s 4d ; W. Park, £2 4s and 3s 11d ; E. Osborne. 5s 9d ; Keeling 10s.
