} HOUSE OP REPRESENTATIVES. Tuesday, July 2. The House met ac 2.80. The following bills were introduced and read a first time :— Sir G. Grey, a Bill to provide for the election of the Governor of New Zealand, and a Bill to provide Land for the purpose of Settlements in the colony of New Zealand; Mr Guinness, a Dill to amend the Workmen's Wages Act, 1884 ; Sir H. A. Atkinson, the Otago Central Railway Bill ; Mr Hislop, the Chatties Transfer Bill. OBDEB OF BUSINESS. The Premier made a statement with respect to the order of business, and in doing so took the opportunity of congratulating Mr Ballanoe and the Opposition on that gentleman's election to the leadership. He assured the hon. gentleman that the Government would always be prep red to meet him fairly. (Cheers,) He had re. cently received deputations from town and country members on the subject of the representation quota, and he understood it to be the general feeling that that question should be decided as early as possible. He proposed therefore to take the Representation Bill before the Property Tax Assessment Bill on Friday. (Hear, hear.) Mr Ballance (who was received with cheers) thanked the Premier for his kindly expressions, and assured the hon gentleman that, as far as possible, he should meet the Government fairly with friendly criticism with tin object of facilitating business. The Opposition would pursue no factious policy of criticism, recognising that one of its most important functions j was to promote the deßpatth of business. He agreed with the Premier's proposal as to the Representation Bill being brought up on Friday. (Cheers ) The second reading of th* Dunedin Exhibition Street Closing Bill was agreed to. The Colonial Secretary moved the second reading of the Corrupt Practices Prevention Bill, which was discussed and the debate adjourned for a week. EVENING SITTING. The Ministers answered many questions, and in reply to one, stated it was intended to introduce this session a Bill limiting or abolishing the totalisator. — It was intended to bring in a disoussion oh Colonial Defences followed.
