BINDER TWINE.
We are indebted to a correspondent for sending us this most interesting extract f om " The Implement and Maohmi-ry Review" of this last April's date. '' Binder Twine. Itap pears that there" were consumed in the Unitod States of America last year, 100,000 bales of Maniffain excess of the production and that sisal was in proportionate d niand. As the output of these two standard fibres is not to he increased within a less period than three to five years, as also the exhaustion of the pre ' sent stock will not take long, it seems to.be apprehended by American implement makers that they will have to pay considerably increased prices for the 34,000 tons of twine which will be required in addition to the present stock of 6,000 tons to bind the crop of 1889. It is suggested that some good might be done by the removal of the tariff on Manilla, and sisal, but the best means that can be proposed to meet the difficulty is the utilisation of some native grown substitute. In th« absence of any discovery of such a material io vever, it is difficult to see how the reaper firms of the United states can escape from the threatened increase. Manilla and sisal were retailed in America in 1888 at 12 cents to 15 cents a pound. n increase to 20 c nfcs would mean an advance, in the cost of binder twine of 5,000,000 dollars to 8,000.000 dollars over that of a year ago!"
