LONDON. The despatch ofthe German squadron from Geuoa to Samoa has been confirmed. W.th reference to Russia's extension of a railway to the southward, Arminius Yambery states that i is seeking a pretext for a quarrel with England over the administration of of affairs in Afghanistan. In the House of Commons Mr A. J. alfour, Chief Secre ary for Ireland, stated that the agitators in Ireland h*d redoubled their efforts in iuciting the people to refuse to pay rent, and, because crime was fast decreasing, farms which were boycotted were now re let, and trade and railway traffic were improving Mr Ba,i lour stated that he most distinctly declined to extend any favour ta political prisoners, as tbey were more deserving of punishment than those whom they made their dupes. < Father Stephens has been arrested on a charge of inciting tenants to withhold payment of rent. At the Special Commission to-day evidence was given that Houston had employed Pigott to obtain ,tbe celebrated letters in Paris. The crossexamination of Pigott indicates that th- latter forged those he sold to The Time 3.
