Manawatu County Council.

j The usual monthly meeting of the above body was held at the Council Chambers, Sanson, yesterday. Present — Grs McKenzie (chairman), Bansom, Hammond, Saxon, McLennan, and Lavkworthy. Correspondence was then read as follows : — From H- Barber, Foxton, stating that he intended slaughtering sheep and catte on his property for the use of men employed at the flax mills, also on his property, and asking if it was necessary to have a slaughtering license. From Henry Rutherford, Feilding, making application for license to slaughter on section 84, Sandon district. From Reeve and Co., applying for a license for a slaughter house near the Motuiti railway station. Proposed by the Chairman, and seconded by Cr Eansoin, "That the chairman be instructed to obtain from Mr D. Murray a report on the Government engine for sale at Wanganui, and if favourable the Tram Committee be empowered to tender for the same." — Carried. Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by Cr Hammond, " That the overseer be instructed to expend a sum not exceeding £20 in protecting the Awah«ri bridge, provided the consent of the Manawatu Eoad Board be obtained, and that they becorm liable for half the cost."— Carried. Tenders were opened and dealt with as follows:— Mr Eobinson's drain — J. Monteith 8s per chain ; T Harvey 7s per chain ; J. W. McLarin 6s 6dper chain; P. 0. Grady, 7s per chain: D. Desmond, 6s per chain (accepted). McDonald's-line — D. Desmond, 14s 6d (accepted). Deepening and cleaning drains on Freck-lington's-line.— There was only one tender, and that being considered too high, it was decided to call for fresh tenders. Proposed by the Chairman, seconded by <*r Hammond, " That the amount of the dog-tax for the year 1c39 be 10s per dog on all dogs wiihin the county, and that a rebate of 5s be allowed to all persons who pay their tax by the Ist of April, and that the tax be payable at the County office, Sanson, during office hours " Carried. Proposed by Cr Larkworthy, and seconded by Cr McLennan, " That Mr E. G. Cox be appointed dog-tax collector and register of dogs for the county, and that he be allowed 5s per dog for each and every dog registered by him from the Ist of April to the 31st of December 1889." — Carried. Eenewals of slaughtering licenses were granted to A. Easton, Foxton ; Co-operative Company, Foxton ; Eobert Garret, Campbelltown ; Thomas Hirst, Feilding ; and Henry Eutherford, Feilding. The new applications were not granted, as the applicants had not complied with the requirements of the law, which provides that the applicant shall advertise his inten • tion to apply for a license at least a month pi evious to the application. Proposed by Cr Eansom, seconded by Cr Hammond, and carried. "That CrR McKenzie, Hammond, and the mover be a committee to call for and accept tenders for pnetailinsj, in the Campbell and Waitohi ridings." Proposed by Cr Larkworthy. seconded by Or Eansom, "That the occupant of the cottage at Carnarvon be allowed to rent it at 8s per week, to be paid monthly in advance ; that he be allowed to line the aforesaid cottage to Cr McLennan's satisfaction, and that n. rebate of Is Od per week be allowe I until half the cost be liquidated ; three month's noiiice of termination of lease to be given. — Carried. Moved by Cr Hammond, and secon. ded by Cr Ennsom, •• That John Coffey be appointed ponndkeoper at Awahuri on the same terms us the Inst poundkeeper." Carried. — Abridged from the Advocate.
