SANDON CARNARVON HIGHWAYS BOARD.

. Saturday, July 16, 1881. The Board met at their office, Sanson, at 11.30 a.m: Present-Messrs Farmer (Chairman), Jarvis, M'Kenzie, Whiteman, Gifforu, and Bishop. . ■ ■' . -.MJNfTKS. The minutea^of 'the previous meeting, after one or two alight alterations had been mado, were read and confirmed. ' CORRESPONDENCE. William Davis wrote,asking the sanction of the Board to falling 30 chains of bush on Taipo road line, at 30s per acre.—Application granted. Letter. rea4 from the Colonial Secretary's office," asking to be aupplied with the co3t of the Board's valuation, in order to make op a Parliamentary return.— -The Secretary was instructed to Bupply the information asked for. . , banks' line campbelltown. Mr Meyer, settler at Campbelltown, waited on the Board in reference to the matter of the formation of this road, and handed in the amount of £32 10s 0J towards the sum of £40 which had been promised by the Carnarvon settlers. The balance of the amount guaranteed had been promised, and would be all paid in. Mr Jarvis proposed—" That the ManaConnty Council be requested to instruct their Engineer to lay off the road leading from Jones' Line to the Taipo District, and superintend the construction of the same ; that it bean instruction to the Engineer to provide the specifications for one drain and formation the whole of: the way, two drains so far as the money will allow, and to be let in two or three contracts, if possible." Seconded by Mr Gifford and carried. Mr M'Kenzie said he considered Mr Meyer was well deserving of a vote of thanks for the trouble he had gone to in raising the £40. He also felt sure that he had spent a considerable amount of time m the matter. He therefore proposed; " That a vote of thanks be accorded Mr Meyer for his action in collecting the A'4o." This was seconded by Mr Jarvis, and carried unanimously. • "TENDERS. For making footpaths, Sanson. —T. Baxter, £8 ; A. Croucher, 20s per chain ; T. Shorthall, £1 7s per chain ; C. Retter, £"y (informal) ; A. and J. Thompson, £5 53 (accepted). Erecting bridges and ditch formation on Taipo line of road.— A. and J. Thompson, £23 3s (accepted); Monteith & Co., £21 11s 6d— 'dingle ditch formation, 14", double 28s ; Matthews and Co., £21 103, ditch formation 14s per chain; Mnllins & Co., £22 153, drain 103 6d per chain ; H. P. Thompson, A' 23, ditch 103 per chain. , Formation 18 chains River Bank line— A. and J. Thompson, £8 ss ; Monteith and Co. £9 ; M. Coyle, ,612 } M. Holland, £7 2s 6d (accepted). ; . A BROKEN BRIDGE. Mr A. M'Hardie, a settler on Speedy 's line, attended the Board, and brought un €r*r the notice of the members the unsafe condition of a bridge on the road which led to his property. Mr M'Hardie stated that some of his horses had fallen through the bridge in qqestion, and he was obliged to leave his trap on the road side. It appears the bridge had been ereoted some time ago by the settlers themselves. It was the general feeling of the Board that the bridge should be replaced at ence, and it was resolved to leave the matter in the hands of the Chairman, who was instructed to have the work done as quickly as possible. •speedy's line. It was resolved to call for tenders for formation of road on Speedy's line, to be considered at next meeting-. FCRTHER POSTPONED. The matter of the adjustment of the finance of the different ward«, which had been adjourned from last meeting, was furtherpostponed; the Chairman stating that he had not yet received any communication from the old Board as to the amount of the debt owing to that body. Immediately on receiving a letter containing the information, he would call a special meeting to consider the whole question. This course met with the approval of the Board, THE ARREARS OF BATES. Mr Bishop asked if any report had been received from the Collector in reference to the old rates. He said that another vexatious case had occurred. A settler had been summoned to the Court at Bulls, his rates having been, paid to the old Board, and he had been awarded £1 expense s, and the solicitor's fee of £1 Is had also been awarded. He thought this frittering away of the' Board's funds should be stopped. — The acting Clerk explained on behalf of the Collector that in regard to the mistake spoken of by Mr Bishop, the error had been discovered, and the summons withdrawn, but owing to a mistake of the Feilding bailiff, the summons was served. Mr Jarvis remarked that he thought? the old rates Had better be left alone, if they were going to cost so much, and the matter then dropped. ACCOUNTS. It was resolved that the next general meeting be held on. the 20th August. THE PROPOSED ELECTORAL DISTRICTS. Befojgtthe meeting closed. Mr M'Kenzie , said heMMl a' resolution which he would' ask the Board to pass in reference to the matter of the proposed new electoral dis- 1 tricts. He said it was no doubt quite clear to all that: the proposed division would not be at all to the advantage of the district, and he would therefore move — " That this B^ard, on behalf of the district whioh it represents, protests against the Sropoaed; \ cutting -op of this electoral istritit to supply the deficiencies -of other district*,: and would urge for the consideration of the Government the following viz: —That the population of this district is rapidly increasing ; that there are atill hundreds of thousands of sores of waste lands suitable for agricultural settlements, and that although ■ the present population may be a little below the number required to entitle Manawatu to two representatives, yet it is obvious that within twelve months from this date the required number. will be more than made up; and iarihn, that, the interests of this district are entirely separate from the Wellington Oonn^ry/ qistnct. . . : That a copy of this reso|utiQn : be sent .to > the Hon.
