ARREST OF MR WHITELAW.
As a by no means unexpected resalt of the very trenchant report of the Royal Commission enquiry .- into the late management of the Lunatic Asylum here, we find that the late Superintendent, "Whitelaw, was arrested on Saturday afternoon hist, on an information sworn by Chief I)e---tective Brown, instructed by the Government, under the Lunatic Act. It is in that measure provided that if any one in charge of a lunatic shall ill use or maltreat any so afflicted, he or she shall be liable to special penalties, and the information on which Mr Whitelaw has been arrested is in regard to his alleged cruelty, to a patient named William M'lntosh, by stripping him, making him traverse 'a portion of the yard on a winter's night, and ultimately keeping him in a coid shower barh foi ten minutes. The offence is said to have been committed in May, 1878. Though no other informations have yet been laid, we understand that others will 1; bo proceeded with under the same Act, though no particulars are yet made. The warrant in question was signed by Colonel Reader, but, hail was allowed, the accused in £150 each. After a short, delay the re quired bondsmen were found, viz . Messrs J. E. Hayes, plumber, &c. of Lamb't n quay, and W Li^ht, oi the Queen's H.-fel. Mv Wbi claw will probably be formally br«mj>hi *hp today and remanded, and the - caße when fin nil) disposed of wi 1 not be d<*alt wiih l»y Mr Vhaw, R.M., as he has already in comm n with the other Commissioners, expressed " a strong opinion : n the subject* It is needless to say i hat there is con siderable in'eres-t felt on 'he suVjtct and 'hat a good deal of feeling has been evoked by both th<^ enquiry and ■ the result. - N.
