DISTRICT COURT.
The Court opened at Palmerston on Tuesday morning, before Mr Hardcastle, District Judge. Henry Arthur, charged with stealing two watches and a quantity of jewellery, the property of Edward M'Elwain, who was hurt nt the Otaki races, was found frailty, and sentenced to nine months' imprisonment in Wxnaranui Gaol. -He was defended by Mr Hawkins. Patrick M 'Wrath, charged with stealing a watch the property of Antonia BeUve, daughter of the landlord of a hotel at Fefldinjr, was also found trail ty and sentenced to nine months' imprisonment. Benj iraiu Cannon, of Otaki, for stealing tho property of James Parman, carrier, hid in the sandhills near Paikakariki, was found truilty and sentenced to nine months' im- ' prisonmcnt. Edmund Symons, charged with| aiding and abbetting Cannon to commit a lareany, was tried on Wednesday, and the jury being unable to a^ree were locked np for the night. On Thursday morning, beinftt still unable to agree, they were dischargee^ and a new jury empanelled, the whole trial being gone through again. Upon arrival of the train last night we learned that this jury also were unable to agree, and consequently were locked np last night.
