As the Czar and suite were witnessing a militavy parade, two bombs were thrown The first fell without injuring him, but the second shattered His Majesty's legs, mortally wounding him. He died within two hours, from loss of blood. The assassin was immediately arrested. Several persons were killed and wounded by the bombs. [The above was issued as an extra on Tuesday.] St. Petersburg, March 11. The assassination of the Emperor has led to no disturbance in this city. All is perfectly quiet. The Czarewich has been received with shouts of acclamation by the people. Expressions of condolence and sympathy with the Imperial family have been received from all the crowned heads in Europe. The Czar Alexander the Third has issued a manifesto upon his accession to the throne of Russia. His Majesty strongly denounces the murderous attack made on the dynasty. The manifesto gives no outline ofthe fnture Imperial policy. The assassin of the late Emperor is named Rousakoff, and is known to have been a student of the Russian Mining School. H« remains quite silent in gaol, and refuses any information as to the motive which prompted his crime. St. Petersburg, 15th March. Rousakoff, the assassin of the late Emperor, has now made a fall confession of his crime. A Nihilist manifesto has been issued, referring to the assassination of the Czar, in terms of exultation at the success of Rousakoff s attack. Several arrests of Nihilists, suspected of having been directly instrumental in the issue of the manifesto, have since been made. London, March 12. In the House of Commons today, the Right Hon. AY. E. Gladstone made a statement regarding the position of affairs in the Transvaal. \H c announced that, with a view to bring about a complete cessation of hostilities and a. permanent settlement ofthe difficulty, Peace Commissioners would be appointed in the Transvaal to undertake negotiations with the JJoers. It is now asserted that the Land Bill will not be submitted to Parliament for another month. The dilatory policy of the Government is severefy criticised by the Radical Press, but it is generally believed that the delay is due to a division of opinion in the Cabinet upon the leading principles included in the measure. In the United States and on the Continent a strong feeling of sympathy is expressed with the Boers. I The Continental Press condemns the ! annexation of the Transvaal as arbitrary and uncalled for, and describe the Boers as a brave people fighting for their liberty. Intelligence has been received, via San Francisco, that small-pox has broken but in the Sandwich Islands, and is committing great ravages among the natives. At Honolulu especially the mortality is excessive. March 7. Walsh, one of tho members of the Land League, who was amongst those recently prosecuted for sedition, has leffc Ireland for New Zealand. It is assumed that the object ofl his visit is to make arrangements in the Australian colonies for the collections of subscipfcions on boh? If of the Land League. A proposal has been mooted by the Alpine Club to visit New Zealand for the purpose of thoroughly exploring the iihe mountainous scenery of the colony. The idea has been favoraby received among the members, aud it is anticipated that a considerable number will visit New Zealand.
