THE SUBSIDIES.

♦ ** For some months past the Chairmen of the various local bodies have been wondering when the subsidy due from the Treasury was to be paid. The following telegram from Dunedin will perhaps throw some light on the question : — " Mrßarron received the following telegram from the Treasury : • Subsidies to local bodies will be paid as soon as possible. The delay is in obtaining information as to the cost of hospitals and charitable aid.' " As the exchequers of the different local bodies are becoming nearly exhausted, it is to be hoped the information wanted j by the Treasurer re hospitals and charitable aid will soon be forthcoming. _

Presbyteuian Church. — '.'h< % services at tho Foxton Presbyterian Church on Sunday next will be condiictei by tho Rev. D . Stuart, of Dunedin, whose name i* a house hold word through nut the colony, and especially amongßt people of his own denomination. The rev doctor is not oily an ablo preacher, bur. his large-hearted, open-handed charity has endeared him to the peoplj of OuDedin. It ia therefore tolerably certain that the flit tiers will gather in 1 rcn numbers to hear him preach on Sunday. Special attention is called to the fact that there will be service on PunHny next at the Presbyterian Church both m' rning and eveuiug, Dr Stuan preaching on euch ocoaaion Filed.— Mr J. A. Perien, of Fox»o-i, ha> filed a declaration of insolvency. Tun first meeting of creditors will be held at f ilmerMon on Fiidav, November 26. P.\l,meihton Mayoralty.— The burgesses of I'almerston have reelecred Mr Jan. Lipton an Mayor of that Borough, without opposition. Theya:etobe congratulated on th'-ir choice, and from the enterprise Mr Linton has displayed as a private citizen, »s well ns hia ability us a public administrator, wo thiuk it likely the P-il-mtraton people will confer the same honor upon him year after year, so long as he is willing to accept it. Diorama.— A diorama will be exhibited at th» building behind Howe's Hotel this evening- Particulars in advertisement. Thr Chbihtys at Palmers-ton.— The conterap'ated visit of the Foxton Cbristys to the inland town has called forth tha following paragraph from the local paper : — Distinguished Viaitore. — From our Southern contemporary we lcaru that there is a probability of the Foxton Christy Minsticla paying a visit to Palmereton, and giving the people of this town a test of their merits. Should they do fio, we have little doubt they would be satisfied with the patronage they would receive. Tho objeot of their visit we believe, would be to supplement the funds in aid of the Annual Regatta, iand as that should be a County matter, no tloubt assistance would be the more readily given." If the Christys take the hints given them after their lust performance we have not the slightest doubt but that they will give every satisfaction, and will obtain a handsome fium iv aid of the Regatta Funds. An Influx of Capital.— There was an influx of capital to the extent of five rhouHaud pounds yesterday, Captain Fraser, of th 6 Jane Pouklhh, bringing up that amount in Hear, crisp. B. N. Z notes. The money is in* ended to be employed, we believe, in pvytoent of the natives for some laud pur-

chisrs at Woodr.' •*. The Ptlraorn on i c >ple Khould thiuviiue receive a hojcL lift during the next tVw weok.i. Foxton has already had its turn.

R M. Court, Otvki. — A sitting of thin Court wan to have been held on I'upsdny last, but a* there whs only one J P. present — !>r W«'W<ou — all tho ua-iPH except one were adjourned until the December sitting Che oases set down for hearing comprised one judgment summons, tw> debt cases, and two criminal cas-\s. Of the latter one was a charge ac iinr>t Ktraitiana te Tn.ie,of bein« drunk whil»i in chirgo of a horse on a public road. The other, which was the exception referred to above, was a charge preferred by Thomas Adams against William Addams, laborer, of Waikawa, chnrg ing him with assaulting him with a slasher with intent to do grievous bodily harm, on the 14th instant. This oase was remanded to Foxton, where it will bo heard by Mr Ward, R.M., next Wednesday. William Addams Las also laid an information, charpiag Thomas Adams with common assault, arising out- of the same squabble. The two cases will probably be heard together. County Council.— The annual meeting of the County Council will be held next Wednesday, November 24, at noon, when the election of r Chairman will take place, the ordinary business being transacted after Persons to whom the Council is indebted should forward their vouchers either today or tomorrow. During the last few months the Finance Committee have beooine very strict, aud intend in future to refuse to puy accounts which are not renewed early enough to enable investigation to be mide as to them. As it is possiole there mi»y be no meeting in December, the uau il meeting day being only about ten days aftor next Wednesday, those who wish to obtain payment of accounts should send in their claim." at once. Our Ckbdit.— The circular of the N.Z Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. is to hand. Referring to New Zealuul securities, it flays: — "New Zealand Securities hive exhibited some weakness, and both the 4£ per cents., 5 30, and the Inscribed Stock are 2 lower. The 5 per cents Consolidated have likewise given way 1, but the re9fc of the 5 per cent, issues hivu improved from 2 to 1 since 9th ultimo." j United in Shadow.— We are told n time is coming when tlip lion and the limb will lie down together in n mutually happy and ' contented frame of mind. Such a s'ato of nffiirs will certainly not. be in tho inunedi tt<> future, as lamb? are now just as tend- r nnd lions just as fierce a* they ever were. Still, if the fact of two skippers running opposi tion bo its being on the very bflsf. of terms in a* y indication of the approach of the Mill-mum, tha* august periol in the World's hi-tory is approaching. Yesterday, Cjptain Frn«er offered to show o'lr reporter '* photographs of the two principal members ot the Kelly pftnjr," and on producing it fro n his pocket, mirabile dictv., it was himself nnd Captain Wi'ls. of the Tni, taken together on the American principle, which has proved so popular at Wei ington. Upon the face of the skipper of tho Tui there was the usual placid and serene look, and the expression of the countenance, of the jovial old salt who guides the destinies of the Douglas was.— well decidedly pleasanter than it looked yesterday morning, when he steamed up and found the Tui was at tho wharf half an hour before him, and in possession of the best berth. Nevertheless, for oncu the lion nnd the lamb havo been photographed together, though which is lion and whit-h lamb it would puzzlo a Philadelphian lawyer to say. Perhaps they take a turn at each. Fixed.— Mr E. H. Crease, the weilknown Wellington coffee manufacturer, wis ou Tuesday la*t, at the Empire' City, fined £5. and ordered to pay a duty of 4d in the £ on his property, for neglecting to send in a statement of his property, in compliance with the Property Tax Act. This is th-j first cisc tried in the colouy under tliia Act, and tho above is the minimum penalty that can ba indicted. If any property holder Ins not yet fui niched his return, he hid better take w.uning. Railways.— There are 3*7 miles of rail way open for traffic in tha N >rth Island, and 823 miles in the S-.tnth Yft the southerners think themselves hur.lly treated by the North, and re#.ird eve«-y northerner as a bloodsuuke r ! The Poisoning Case. — In his charge to the Grand .Turv on Wednesday last, Judge Richmond referred as follows to the chur-.'o of poisoning upon which Francis Rumsey is to be tried at the present sittings of the Supreme Court at Wan«anui :— *" There was a charsre of poisoning which at first had startled him, but he had felt relieved on finding that the poison used was one that was rather freely in use from the Three Kings to Stews »t's Island. IL-re-ferred to alcohol. In the case under notice the dose appeared to have been given when the parties were more or less in a stato of drunkenness. 1 1 was not a case, therefore, that would disturb the sense of publi • safety to the same extent as aa ordinary case of poisoning." The Quintessence of Meanness. — of Bone Bone, Ins f ml\- '200,000 shet-p, an Uiis, therefore, (siys iEjlus) to bi? very careful and economical. The >elec tor's daughter, who perform-* the combined duties of cook, laundress, and housemaid, is acquiring a rapid fortune out of her splendid wipes of 4s per week. What wonder, then th«t S witchery should say to Mrs S., unon hearing th*r Jane hid without his knowledge o sanction given aw y »»no of the foil* bitely-arrived kittens. " What my dear— given away a kitten f Why, she might a? ' reasonably give awiy a bullock of mine,oi'R horsj, or a sheep. Now on principle, you 1 know and, ns a lesion to her, I trill charg Jane 2s 6d f>r that kitten. Just \vmd mithat account book, de»r. Tuanks" But. Switchery was perhaps not more gifted with that charity wlrch begins (<mil ends) at home than Trundle of Shecpshollow. Upon his manager occluding 13 years' faithful atrvije, T. objected to th« removal of come hens. " But, sir," remonstrated the depnrting manager, '' I bought and pail for the original stock." '• Just so." »aid Trundle, " but they have been fed on the elation crumbs !" Economy of a Reformed spelmjjq.— According to London Truth, it is calculated by the advocates of a reformed syat m of spelling that, by the adoption of the phonetic rule, there would be a saving to a writer of one hour and twenty minutes in a day of eight hours, or 400 hours in a year of 300 days. A saving of 20 per cent would be effeced on the same amount of literary matter in the Times newspaper, and an equal saving in the cost of new books. Over all depnrtmerts of English Hteraturo it is calculated that there would be a saving of £10,000,000 annually. A Modbrv Solomon.— -A very good story is told of Captain Beckham, who was th 6 Resident Magistrate at Auckland for many years. A yonug woman brought a innn into Court for sustenance mouyy for a baby, of which he was the reputed father. In order ro escape payment, the man brought three or for other mean akuuks to swear f hut thny had be"n equally guilty. Judge, therefore, of tbeir consternation whon Beckham ordered each of them to pay five

sniilhiurn per week for a number of years. Captain B .'sUam wus applauded, the woman delighted, tin* m-u duinfouudcd, au<l baby numerously futh red. A Modbl Faumeh. — \ certain mechanic in one oi th ■ up country districts recently took i into his hend ihut h<* wir intended by nature for a farm -r He purchased Home land and proceeded to stock it One of the ows which he pr cured soon nvinifestel symptoms which were at- un^e to this wuuldbe feeder of beasts. Vi-«<> n of pleitropneumonia pished throu/b. hiß mind, and rather th:u> Lone his h 'id he determined cm extreme measures. Hushing into tli« house he got his gun an^ deliberately shot thn beast. His disgust may be imagined , when in it 9 doath-throes the cow brought forth a fine calf .—Exchange. The Christohcrch DbrbT. — It is worthy of note, says the Ashburton Guardian, that the Canterbury Derby was done in faster time than oo any previous occasion. The Hon R. Campbell's Sir Modrod, which started at the odds of 4 to 1, did the distance in 2min 43aecs. The Melbourne D 3rby this year occupied one second logger, and many partieß are pretty well agreed that for any race of a mile and a-halt' the Klemiugtou course is equal to three seconds better than (Jhriitchurch This would give Sir Modred the reputation of being four seconds faster than Grand Flaneur, with the B'tme weight and distance. Lure, the favourite, and own sister to Lurline, started at the odds of 3 to 2 on, and finished founh. The result will be disastrous lo raetalliciuns. Mr Gladstone. — A Midlothian Elector, who obtained an order of udmittanoe in the House of Commons, wag asked on his re turn, how ho liked the discussion. " Discussion I" says he, * I could neither mak' head or tnil o"' it. But I heard Mr Gladstone. Yon's an awfu' man to *peak. li's far easier for yon moi to mak' a grand speech nor to baud his tongue !"— Yuri* House Papers. Mark Twain's Recipe foh Gekman Copfee — Take a barrel of waier and bring it to a noil ; rub a chicory berry against a coffee-berry, then convey the former into the water. Continue the bi iling ani ev.poration until the intensity of the flavor and ar.imn of the coffee and chicory h.»« been diminished to a proper degree, then sot aside to coo. v ow unharness tho remains of a once cow from the plouirh, insert them in a hydraulic pres*, and when y»u shall have acquired a tea^poonful of that p deblue juice which a Germin superstition regard.-* as milk modify the nrilignity of it. HtreugLh in a bucket <>f tepid water, and biiug up the breakfast. Mix the beverage in a coll cup, partake with moderation, and ke p a wet rag around your head to guard against over-excitomeut. The Gold Robbery.— Tho robbery of a box of gold from the steamer Tararua is causing a good deal of etir. A cablegram from Melbourne under dato November 16 says : — " It is suspected that the missing box nf gold was larded at tho Bluff or Hob'utown. It has transpired that the duplioate key ot' the Tararua's bullion room Huh been lost." An Association telegram from Dunedin, of the same dute, says: — The purser of the vessel and two officials of the Bank of New Zealand witnessed the lodgment of the gold in the safe of the i'ararua. The gold consisted of five ingots, paoh weighing neatly 250 >zs. All con eeroed in the loss are anxiously waiting the arrival of fu th t particulars. Tho gold was shipped by the Bank of New Zealand in Dunedin. The fact that the gold is in bars of large size should make its disposal difficult unless, indeed, the rubbers provo to be jrofeHsional thieves.
