THE ROWING CHAMPIONSHIP.

(REOTER'S TJJLIiORAMB.) Londox, November 15 The niat«h between Kdward Trickefct, of Sydney, N.8.W., and Elward Hanlon, of Canada, was vowed today on the Thames champion course. The contest resulted in a victory for Hunlon, who won easily. Later. The greatest interest was taken in the race lor the campionship today. The attendance of the public was enormous, crowds lining the banks of the rivei along the course. The betting at the fitart was in favour of Hanlon, who was in Bplondid form. The two meu pot off with a good start, and in sino >th water. Hanlon commenced with 128 and Tiickett I with 34 Strokes a ininute. Ihey I kept together for half a-mile, pulling

evenly, but afterwards Hanlon took the lead, and played with 'i iickett during the last three miles, wiuiiing the rac i easily by fully two lengths. The time of the race was 26min 12sets.

The news that Triokett had lo*t>tbe rare with Hmlon, has caused a very genital feeliug of disappointment throughout tJbo colonies. Not only New -outh Wales, but Victoria and New Zealand also, took a deep interest in the young " Cornstalk " who had gone to the Mother Country to endeavour to wrest from all comers the honor of being the chumpion oarsman of the world. He hap lost, and by cablegram from Sydney we learn that his friends there believe he has lost it fairly. Those who- know him best therefore have every confidence in his honor, though it has boon proven their confidence in his skill has been overrated. As regards the time in which the raoe was rowed, it will be noticed it is placed at 26aeos. 12min. As a matter of fact, Triekett went over tho same course in 187.8, wuen be beat Sadler, in lmin. 42apc8. less time, having rowed the distance thcu iv 24mina. BJj?ca. Either, then, be has lost some o f hid former Breed, or the wind and tide were less favourable to him in the contest with Hanlou than they were in that with Sadler. Certainly the gap between the time for the two races is very great, as a rapid oarsman like Triekett could bkim over » lot of water in lmin. 42 sees. Hftiilon it now 27 years of age, and Trwkett SO. The foiiaor was born at Toronto, Ontario, and hi* parents kepta public house on an island near his birthplace. Me first came into notice when 20 yean old, and since then has rowed in tweuty big races, of which he has lost only three.
