MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL. . *
ENGINEER'S REPORT. TAONVI UIDISa. Tlie roads ari< iv good state of repair. I have started to widen the County ftoad at Awapuni by filliusr iv the ditch. Mr Hotheriirn hurt as-dated in this work by running down some 200 yards of stripping and. metal for the work. I pUced my meu on to fill in the ditch and spread the metal. This whs a most dangerous part of road, there being only some twelve feet between railway platform and a large unsightly ditch. I would ask the Council to urge upon the Government that another £5J is required to complete the bush-felling and clearing on the Fitzherbert Uoads, to open the road throughout from Manchester Highways District to the Native boundary to south of Fitzherbert. OROUA HIDING. Only repairs have beeu dono in this Bi<iing during tho month. The roads are in very fair order throughout. KAWA X.OVA RIDING I have still the three men on the SansonCarnaivon Koad doing some of the worst parts. I have aho had soino slight work done to the drift-sand on County ltoa<l, near five mile-post, ho that people cau travel over same. This said saud now covers the whole width of the road. Monteith uud Dove are making good progress with their contract of formation on Sanson-Carnarvon Koad. Deuiou has not done much to his work at present, he ouly having 1 one man on to clear some scrub, &c., off road line. I would ask to be allowed to cxll tenders to repair the County road through bush at or near Sanson. This requires, say, four inches of metal spread over same, and if to be done, should be put iv hand at once. AWAHOtJ BIDING. According' to your instruction, I have called tenders for inet.llinj; Avenue Ro&d ; Ht the sumo timo have to call your attention to the increased railway charges fot carriage of road motal, which will grea'.ly increase the cost of road making where metal id required to be conveyed by railway. llosenthal has completed his contract of formation on Avenue Koad. HOROWHKNUA HIDING. According to your instructions I went to tho Horowhenua Block on the 6th of Oc tober, and measured up the whole of the bnsh'felling contract, and on 6th mnde out vouchers for pnymont. -1 visited the road live cut by Mr Carkeek ; he is also stopped hy Natives at, Wuikauae, having cm the line to the Native boundary. If you wit>h j this line to bj forced through, I mutt aik
for an authority for Mr Carkeek to survey the aforesaid block to Waikanae. . BRIDGES *AMD PEBMEg. The whole of the ferries are in good working order. I rod« to BulJtown and interviewed Mr Thomas re Scott's ferry, Bangittkci River, He stated that, to the best of his belief, «£ there were no ferry charges posledTup at * ferry ; a!so that Mr Scott had si^ed an agreement with Rangitikei County Council to work ferry in a proper manner, as 1 take it, the flame as all other ferries are worked, l and Pcule of tolls is understood to be same a* other feiries. Mr Thomas promised to brin« the question of tho working of this ferry before the Rangitikei County Council at its next meeting. According to Chairman's instrnciionr, I attended tho Terry Committee meeting, at. Feilding, on the 18th day of last month and look notes for draftiug a set of Conditions for Lease of Ferries.
