Retibed. — Mr Lash, who but resently was raised from the common horde to the dual dignity of a member of the Manchester Highways Board and Manawatu County Council has found the burden of his honors too grea*, and resigned both. We were under the impression that he intended only to surrender the County seat, but observe he has also resigned from the Board, as an election is notified by the Returning officer for a member in place of Mr Lash.

Abt Union.— Mr R. Gk Palmer intends to art union a number of piotures shortly, including several paintings from his own brush, a number of handsome photographs, &c. The merit of Mr Palmer's piotures is well known, and as there are twenty prizes to be distributed amongst the forty tioketholders, the affair should he well patronised.

Notes pbok Otaki.— Our Otaki correspondent writes as follows, under date August ll:—The7 :— The new lookup is to be built at last, the successful tenderer being Mr Jas. Russell, of Wellington, who built the new telegraph office here some two years ago, so there will be no chance of any Ti Oriori escaping again. — The Hokimai, our well-known cutter, is now in the Waika_.ae river, with a cargo of timber successfully discharged for the Hon. Wi Parata. She will return for another cargo of timber for the new lock-up here.— The City of Auckland has settled down almost in the centre of the Otaki river, at tbe mouth, and pro* bably will prevent small crafts from entering until a better channel is formed.

Christy Entertainment'-- In another column appears the programme of the entertainment to be given on Wednesday evening next by the Foxton Christys, on behalf of the property fund of the olub. An excellent programme appears to hire been arranged for the occasion, and if it is only carried out well should afford a capital evening's amusement. The members of the company have been practising most assiduously for the past few weeks, and we have no doubt they will

acquit themselves creditably on the occasion, and we hope their efforts will be rewarded with a bumper house. The Christys have a very fair claim on the public for support, as one performance muse pay for all the properties required, and we understand they will be prepared to give their services on behalf of any deserving fund or charity whioh may he brought under their notice afterwards. Tickets for the performance are to be obtained at the hotels and from the various shops in the town. The members are requested to meet for the lust practice at half-past seven this evening, and the final rehearsal will take place at the Hall on Tuesday.

County Council Vacancy. — Mr A. P. Douglas, of Halcombe, has announced his intention of coming forward as a candidate for the vacant seat in the County Council. Should he be elected, as is extremely pro* bable, we believe he will prove un acquisition to the Council, and a worthy representative of the Manchester riding. The nominations close on August 23, and if a poll is demanded it will take place on September 3, in time for the new member to take his seat at next sitting of the Couacil.

A Judge op Cattle. — A correspondent writes : — " I hear a gentleman in the North Island, not a hundred miles from Wairarapa, is shortly going to Melbourne to purchase a bull for the purpose of improving the breed in that district. Some time ago a gentleman went from the same district — of oourse it could not possibly have been the same as tbe one who is going again ! — to buy a bull, and he thought he had got a beauty, but on reaobiug the end of his long journey it turned out to be a bull stag. This looks bad for cattle judging in that part. I should think our West Coasters should beat that. I wonder if he returned the stag." I

The Maori Gate. — As some misapprehension appears to exist respecting a facetious paragraph we published a few days ago, regarding tbe opening of the Maori tollgate, we may state that the resolution of Ihakara to exercise his right as chief and open tbo gate was not in any sense owing to the influence of liquor, but w<is done after careful consideration by him, and in consequence of advice tendered by Mr A. M'Donald.

Shocking Tragedy at Wellington. — A shocking tragedy occurred at Wellington on Wednesday 1 .st. A few days ago a raan named Matthew Henderson was arrested in that city on v charge of wife desertion, he being then en route for San Francisco with a young lady named liligh, with whom he was eloping from Christchurch. He was brought before the R.M. Court on Monday, and dismissed, owing to a technical informality, but immediately on leaving the Court was again arrested on a charge of embezzlement, and remanded till Wednesday, a Canterbury M.H.R. going bail for him. On that day he did not surrendor to his bail, and on the detective going to his lodgings at the Empire Hotel to arrest him, both he and the young womnn were found lying on the bed writhing iv the agonies of strychuine poisoning. Medical assistance was at once obtained, and fortunately the life of the young woman was saved, but Henderson expired. The affair, because of its dreadful surroundings, has created a great sensation.

Land Purchases. — We understand Mr A. M'Donald, who was recently appointed to complete the purchases of land between Manawatu and Otaki negotiated for by the Government, is vory sanguine of the success of his work, and hopes to have it all completed within six months. Should, he succeed in this, he will deserve the thanks not only of the Government, but of the people on this Coast and in the City of Wellington. Shelved.— The Payment of Members Bill introduced by Mr Seddon has been shelved.
