THE OTAKI MINSTRELS.
TO TUB BDITOB 0* THH HaNAWATU HSRAM>. Sir,— lnvert the old adage, •' After a storm comes a calm," and it becomes " After a calm comes a storm." It has been the Utter with us in Otaki. For months we have had nothing to relieve the monotony of every day life, when suddenly up starts some of our parvenus, who fancy themselves adepts in the histrionic art. r I refef to a band of men who glory iri being called " Ohio Christy Minstrels." 'I'hey are (O, high 0). On Monday evening the 12th inst. they treated the inhabitants to. an exhil>ition of thoir vocal and instrumental tnlen!s, having appointed Mr- as critique, who was so delighted with the ridioulous autics which hud been cu,t as to exclaim, when interrogated as to their propriety, s "Yes! Yes! Confound-d-d it— Yes; Splendid- d-d, Yes— for muffs!" Jameg Hennessy may have had aomothing to do with the above exclamation as he was figuring, not so well corked as the " Minstrels" themselves. Of course a dance followed these frolics.in which the " Mihstrela " took an active par! , and so well pleased were they with it. the lucre obtained, and the ebullitions of laughter which their «a.utio had provoked, that they decided to cdn'.inuc|the dancing business aa long as they continue to draw crowded houses. Three nights of the season have now elapsed ; how many more are to come will bfi greatly dependent upon how the " Ohio Minstrels'' continue to agree There has .ilready been a slight outburat re the division of the spoils. I suppose each member i« imbued with the idea that bis services were the most valuable, hence the alterci tion ; but they should sparethe public *th<« pain of having to note the collapse (from internal quarreln) of the greatest galaxy of histronic art that has ever been displayed in Otaki. 1 am told that Foxton means to send a team of minstrels to Otaki. Let them take my advice and profit by the doings of our " v>hio Hinßtrels" and- eliminate all tho refuse, and then they will meet crowded houses, return home contented, and be on a firm footing, and not the ephemeral troupe ours is. Thanking you for your valuable space, I am, &c, NIGGEB. Otaki, July 14th, 1880. > .
