MR BEVAN IN REPLY.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE MAJJAWATC HEBALD. Sib, — f see in your issue of July 13 a le:ter signed J. A. Knocks, which is full of untruth». Ido not think it would be po.* sible for him to make v clearer declaration of his belief in the general meanness and uuiruthfu-nesa of myself and the settlers of Otaki. Now, I draw the attention of the settlers of Otaki, and wish to let them know that Knocks has failed to prove the charge* ho has made in his letter against Bevan and party, as he calls them. He went to the natives, and wanted the native: to say that it whs me and Mr Bright, and Mr Greenough that told them not to pay fur the pig* thht wero trespassing on the roads, and not to give the land for the road. The natives then told him they would not tell lies, tor it wa9 not those ICuropatina that told them. They then told him it was himself and the Hoard that brought un the trouble with them, and told him to be off, and not come again to want them to tell lies. Ho went off then like a dog with his tail under bis legs, and said, " No good the Maori." Now, he must remember, In the Bun, Webs are upnn. VVhat if he gets into one ? Then he will fiing, Let me go, Never hurt the insect so. Now, he says again the constable took proceeding* for the cattle trespassing -without being told. This is untrue. Where must Mr Knocks' senses have teen when the Board passed the resolution authorising the constable to take proceedings against all owners of wandering cattle P Was this not authorising the constable t Why, he omat have been asleep wheu this was passed. He Rays, again* my motives of ill feeling are from having to pay rates. lam ready to pay rates any tim^, but as I say iv my argument to the Board, aot to be wasted on the like of Knocks and native lands. He says the Berans and party know it is

a neceinary iriiH.tuHon. I mu»t Hay it in for I the liUe of Knocks, as ho is receiving « \ large nalary out of us ratepayers, and I do not wonder at him writing against my lettwsjfor if the , Board were abolished, it' ; would be a greater Inn to Johnny than to i Heyau and party, and then ha would have < to go to Wellington and try and get a situation in thi) Lunaho Asylum. Now, Knocks ' wAatfl to know how many pontons are ' covered under the nutae off Thos. Bevan." i If he will go to the Editor of tho Mana-. ; w.vra Hbrald he wilt fee my handwriting. , lam not ashamed of my name, and don't ' ■ign my name " Otaki," or " Ratepayer." Does the €hainnan of the Otaki Highways Bc'ftrd know of the acts of the Clerk, trying to trap the settlers in Otaki, and is the Gterk actmgras rßnake rixx {he'graisTor" ' other parties P I am, &c, Tbos.
