The Highways Board have let the con-tract-for culverts onHiokford's Une; this.the formation of same' road line is bein,* : pushed on with. According to your instructions I have set out prepared plans and called tender? for New Ri— d, throucth Honble; John Johnson's in nd, but in the specification I have not included the fencing, which I find i" part of the arr.mgement with Hon. J. Johnston ; I would ask power to; arrange for fencing so that it could go on simultaneous! with the road formation. The Highways Board contractor on Motoa road was making good progres" when I last visited the said road. The Board have had another length of road pesrged off and called tenders for same. The Local Board contractor is pushing on with his work on Avenue road and making a good job of same. HOROWHENUA R— »INP. The bush felling on Foxton- Otaki road is nearly all completed, except through the Horowhenua block ; .through this said Horowhenua block the work is stopped by the natives. The survey from Mnnawitu river at Foxtou to the beach is finished,' plans prepared and certified to. The surveyor of the Road from Otaki to Waikanae is away on leave on private business. This will be started again in a few days. I re- , ceived from Wi Parata of Waikanoa, giving his consent for the Burvey or road through ' his block, ; tlnro now remain but one piece of land where the natives ■ object (i-e- from Otaki to Waik— xeo) that being theMakahure Block No. 2, and being about 15 chain." across. The principal man here is Honaratewe, aud he will not allow the surveyor to go on through this block.
