THIS HOROWHENUA ROAD.

TO THK EDITOR OF THK MANAWATD HERALD. Sir, — I see in yonriasue of the 22nd inst a letter signed John Kebbell, wherein the writer throws % doubt upon the truth of a statement made by me, and published iv your columns, respecting the terms made with the Horowhenua natives. Now, sir, I still adhere to and can vouch for the truth of that statement. Pe'liaps Mr Kebbull i* not awaru that since my appointment as overseer of the ro-id line, in all instance-, where terms had to be made with the nativos I was invariably cilled upon to maUo .them, and in the case of the liorowhenun natives I was the person that arranged the terms with them, under instructions from the Engineer, being the same as those made with the N^atirHukawa3. These terms were accepted, viz., 25s per chain, and I Iheu reported the matter to the Engineer. I may also state that when the works were stopped at Porontuwhao by tho natives, I went up and arranged with them at the fix^d price— 2ss per chain -an'l the work is now very nearly finished. Hoping I have not trespassed too much on your valuab'e spacj, I am, &c, James Coote*. Otaki. June 28, 1880.
