OTAKI HIGHWAYS BOARD.
A meeting of the above Board was held at Otaki on the 19th inst. Present—Messrs Simcox (Chairman), Hadfield, Davies, M'Crae, Kebbell, and Udy, The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. A letter from Manager Bank of New Zealand, Foxtoa, was read, enclosing Balance Sheet up to 81st March. •■■-- The Committee appointed at last meeting of the Board to arrange with the Natives re road to Otaki river, reported — " That the Maoris who signed the original document agreeing to hand over the land on No. 8 line to the Board, now refuse to carry out their agreement unless allowed compensation. That in the mean time the Committee had called for tenders for the temporary repair of part of present road next the river." The tenders were read as follows — G. Eagar, £1 2s 6d per chain; W. Bevan, £2 per chain. Proposed by Mr M'Crae, seconded by Mr Davies, and carried, " That the tenders for repairs to road leading to river be declined." The Chairman stated that in consequence of the Natives having refused to agree to No. 3 line of road, he had, with Mr Carkeek, made a fuither inspection of the land adjacent. He recommended the adoption by the Board of line No. 4,a plan of which was laid on the table. Proposed by Mr M'Crae, seconded by Mr Udy, and carried—" That the Chairman be authorised to take all the necessary steps to obtain legal possession for this Board ot the land necessary to connect the Mill Road with the Otaki river, as shown on Map No. 2." The Chairman reported that Mr Greenough had abated the nuisance complained of by the Board. Proposed by Mr Davies, seconded by Mr Kebbell, and carried—" That the Constable be authorised to take proceedings on behalf of the Board against the owners of all small and great cattle running at large and trespassing on Highways within the Otaki District." Proposed by Mr Kebbell, seconded by Mr Davies, and carried, •' That the Clerk having failed to alter the accounts as ordered, the consideration of them be postponed to next meeting. Proposed by Mr Davies, seconded by Mr M'Crae, and carried — " That the Treasurer be authorised to invest the sum of £150 with the Bank of New Zealand for a period of twelve months, providing they give 6 per cent, otherwise to invest the above named amount with the Northern Land and Loan Company for the same period. The Board then went into committee, to consider several motions for amending its bye-laws. Several amendments were made, all relating to the conduct of the business of the Board, but of no public importance. Mr Hadfield gave notice of motion as follows re drains : " That in the opinion of the Board the action of the County Council in handing over all the drains in the Otaki Highways District to the control of this Board though perhaps within the letter of the law, is an act which warrants a yearly subsidy from the Council towards the maintenance of such drains." The following accounts were passed for payment : — W. Dodds, firewood, £1 ; F. Able, office fittings, £3 14s lOd. The next meeting of the Board will be held on the 17th July, at 2 o'clock p.m.
