CORRESPONDENCE.
[We are not responsible for the opinions of oar correspondents."] THE MOUTOA RATES. TO THE EDITOR OF THE MAVAWATC HEKATD Sir, — Will you permit me space in your paper to say a word in reference to Mr Macarthur's comparison re letters from Moutoa settlers. We are rated on the rental value, and farms at Moutoa rated at £70 per annum are really not worth as many pence, and still the Manawatu County Council has determined to extort the full amount of rates. If the Chairman leased a farm at £70 per annum, aud a week afterwards a flood came over it, which rendered it worse than useless (because it would cost £70 to repair damages, and then he would get no return for the year), I think he would be inclined to ask for a remission of part of the rent, and would fancy he was hardly dealt with, if denied. Therefore, 1 1 cannot see the force of comparing the Moutoa settlers with storekeepers who had met with losses. • I am, ie, A Moutoa Settler. Moutoa, June 10, 1880.
