THE HOROWHENUA ROAD.
# (prom our own correspondent). Reg? rding the road through the Horowhenua Block, it has been understood by the natives here from parties managing the road line, and their interpreter, that the road should be carried on, and the natives were to receive 5s per chain, with which they seemed quite satisfied. On enquiring I found they could not tell what the 5s was for, and now, hearing of the tenders being out for the work, aro determined the work shall not go on until they see further into this 5s per chain. They visit Foxton to-morrow to see about it, and intend to demand £5 per acre before they will allow any work to be done. They havo had advice from a lawyer about the affair, and he has encouraged them in this proposal. Now, I would strongly advise the County authorities to refer the question to Major ivemp, who is chief owner of this block, and leader of the tribe, \sho gave the County Council orders some time back to go on with their roadmaking through his laud. I consider if money is paid to these bouuceable curs, it would only be wasted. No notice -whatever should be taken of them. llorowhenun, lsr June.
TO THE BUnOK OF THE MANAWATU HERALD. Friend — Salutations. Will you be good enough to print what wo have to say, so that our friends — both Maori and European — may see what we have to say retarding the road -which passes over our block of land That road ought to be purchased for £5 per chain. If neither the County Council nor the Government consent to this price, we, the Maupoko people, will stop the road. This we have decided to do From Hoani Amohangi and J2 others— that is to say, from the whole tribe. Horowhenua, June 3.
