MANAWATU HIGHWAYS BOARD.
■— - f JtunsDAY, May 13, 1880. ENGt-INEEll's REI'OHT. NOi 1 \YARI>. Rosenthal, tho contractor for Cemetery Road metalling, is pushing on with his work, having fmishi.d about eight chnins. I have instru ted him to carry out the short length of installing near bridge in Burnt street, Sanson. The bridges in Feilding-Halcombe Road are finished, 'md also the scrub clearing on tho Cemetery-rlalcombe lioad, as far as Mount Biggs, is carried out. Tho contractor for Freoklington's Line is pushing: on with his work. This, I expest, will be finished before next mee'ing. U ridges on Speedy's Line am finished, and now require tho approaches made to same. Fagan's .Lifie.— The contractor has completed the metalling 1 on this road line. Before final payments are handed over to the contractors I intend to visit each of the above works, as some of them were noi fiuished in time for me to inspect Vef ore ibis meeting, and to detain the cheques for another month would be rather hard on contractors. I have called tenders for metalling this new-formed portion of Wilson line,Sandon. I would strongly urge the necessity of fixiug culverts at some of the creeks on Frecklingtou's Line, Sandon, or otherwise the roads will be nearly impassable during the winter. I would suggest the expen* diture of s iv £-50 on the above culverts. no. 2 ward. Hickford has finished the bush felling on Hiekford's line, Carnarvon, and I have called tenders for the formation of roads. Campbelltown Road. — I have examined this road line, and beg to state it is one of the worst in the whole Ward. Even in summer time it was difficult to ride along, being in places mud up to the horse's knees, and in winter several parts mu>t be quite impassable. The slumps have been badly cleaved, oud at several of tho creeks — through the traffic and water— it is a complete pond. This road line ab.ive all others requires seeintr to, ard more especially the construction of the culverts and approaches (or formation) over same. If .£oo were allowed for the above work, it would be a o;reat boon to the many settlers in Campbelltown. Penny's Line —Together with Mr G-ifford I visited this road line, and would suggest the clearing off the scrub full width and forming roads fourteen feet wide for a distauca of our mile, being that length between present metalled part of road aud the school house. Together with Messrs. Gifford and Deer I visited the Waitui Koad Line re erection of gafe by Mr Wheeler Mr Deer having objected to said gate being erected, I would recommend that Mr Wheeler be allowed to erect a good gate, subject to my approval; but only for six mouths. This will give Mr Wheeler ample time fo erect his fence along road line. I would also recommend that all gates on this road line be removed in six months from this date. According to your instructions I interviewed Mr M'Donald re Waitui and Taipo Road Lines. He stated he had sold the farm througli which this road line runs, but that it was sold subject to the arrangements made with this Board. I may state that the gate referred to by Mr Deer at last meeting was locked on Waitui, and not Taipo Road, as stated by Mr Deer. I afterwards met Mr Fraser. He stated he had no objection, nor would he throw any obstruction in the way of the roads, providing the Board proceeded with the carrying out of the arrangements made with Air M'Donald — viz , fencing along road line. xo. 3 waud. Mr Webb, the contractor for drain at Foxton, had not starts J his work when I hist visited the spot. I have set out a portion for the Moutoa Road foundation, aud called tenders for same.
