MANAWATU ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.
: The annual meeting advertised for i Saturday last, and held at the Town r Hall, Palmerston, was very badly \ attended, owing, we presume, to the r bad weather. The following report t was laid on the table by the Hon. L Secretary : — Gentlemen — I regret to say that [ so little interest has been shown in • the proceedings of this Society lately, » that it Jhas been impossible to do [ anything during the past year. At present there is about 30s to the > Society's credit in the Bank of New Zealand, against which there is an \ amount of J£7 owing to Mr J. P. \ Jjeary. and also about £2 due to the three County newspapers for adver- , tising this meeting. Not a single j subscription has been received as yet ] for the" year 1880, and only two licenses to kill game have been taken out to date, namely by Messrs Lloyd and Crawford, of Palme cston. I j have been toid by several people that i they have seen young salmon on the banks of the river Manawatu, but * none of them have been shown to 1 me, and I think it quite possible that I other young fish have been mistaken I for them. Jusfc before last shooting ', season the Society brought a case [ into the Resident Magistrate's Court 3 against a young man for shooting at » native game out of season, for which, as this was tbe first case of this kind ' tried in this district, he was fined a 5 small amount and costs The Wan* ganui Acclimatisation Society is in- [ debted to this Society for several [ licenses issued by them in this district ' during last season Their Hon. Sec. has promised to obtain a refund as ! soon as possible, but up to date we ! have not received it. I would draw ' the Society's attontion to the fact ' that although the President has not ' formally resigned, lie has left for 1 England, and would ask them to 1 consider the advisability of electing another in his place. I would fur- [ ther suggest the appointment of : more rangers in all parts of the County. Finally, I beg to tender 1 my resignation as Hon. Sec, as I am no longer in a position to undertake gratuitous worlc— I have, &c. Piers E. Wakbueton, Hon. Sec. It was resolved that as so few were present, it was not expedient to proceed to business, but that the meeting be adjourned until 3 p.m. on Saturday, 24th inst., in the Town Hall, Palmerston North.
