» Attempt on the Ozar's Life. Terrible Explosion. - 5 Guards Killed, and 30 Hurt. St. Petei^burg, February 17. Intense excitement has been occasioned in this City, in consequence of a renewed and distardly attempt to dostroy the Czat and the entire Imperial family. From particulars which at present have transpired, it appears that about the time at which guests invited to the grand dinner at the winter palace were assembling, a mine fired by electricity was suddtnly exploded under the guard room, which is situated immediately beneath the grand dining hall. A terrific explosion took place, causing a large rent in the flooring of the dining hall where the Imperial family were supposed to be congregated. Most providentially the gucsta had' not as* i-embied, and all the members cf the family consequently escaped. 'Ihe guard room was.however, completely destroyed, five of the guards being killed on the spot, and no less than thirty others wounded more or less seriously. Not the slightest doubt is entertained that a deliberate attempt was made to assassinate the Czar and Imperial family, aud .the act is believed to be connected with a plot to destroy the palace which was discovered some time ago. Melbourne, Thursday. Arrived — Arawaia, from New Zealand. Mr black has announced his in* tention of offering himself as s can* didate for Maldon in tbe Government interest in opposition to the Hon Jas. Service, leader of the opposition.
