Wednesday, January 28, 1880. (Before E. S. Tkynne and J. T. Stewart, Esqs, J.P's) BREACH OF THE PEACE. George Lyster, John Parry, Te Kapa te Karaha, and Epiha Karepa, were charged with a breach of the peace by fighting in the billiard room of the Manawatu Hotel on Tuesday lasb. F. Jenks 'deposed that the defendants were playing billiards at; Futter's Hotel, on the previous evening ; he went into the billiard room, and saw that there was a scuffle going on, in which defendants took psrt ; a big Maori who was not in Court knocked ono of the Europeans down, and kicked him. Constable Draper, deposed that he heaid a noise at the Manawatu Hotel, and on going inside the billiard room saw the defendants chasing oue another round the billiard-table, and punching one another ; Parry had his coat off, ani the Europeans seemed to be trying to thrash the natives. Lyster declined to say anything in defence. Parry said he did not take his coat off to fight. Ho had it off before the game began. The native prisoners said they did not know why the Europeans struck them. The Bench said it was not a bad cast-, but fighting was illegal, even in self defence. Fined 5s each, and costs, 4s, or 24 hours' imprisonment.
